Walgreens, WebMD integrate each other’s digital health services

WebMD and Walgreens announced that they will each integrate some of the other’s digital health services into their online and mobile offerings. Walgreens customers that have a WebMD account will now be able to refill prescriptions and make clinic appointments at Walgreens through the WebMD website or app. Walgreens digital offerings will also now include some of WebMD’s health content and also help promote WebMD’s app-supported healthy behavior change programs.  Read More

Open Payments website reveals $3.5 billion paid to docs, hospitals

More than half a million U.S. physicians and 1,360 U.S. hospitals have financial relationships with medical device and drug companies, according to data released Tuesday under the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. Information about financial ties between manufacturers and healthcare providers was made public for the first time through the federal Open Payments website, which presented data about three different types of payments or transfers of value made by medical device and pharmaceutical companies to physicians and teaching hospitals. The disclosure effort was mandated by the Sunshine Act, a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It was intended to help the public learn about payments received by doctors from industry groups and how those payments could affect clinical care.   Read More

FDA Online Tool Aims at Greater Data Transparency

In an effort toward greater transparency, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released a new online tool to provide insight into its inspection, compliance, and recall data.
The new dashboard --which is hosted in a cloud environment--provides information for fiscal years 2009 to 2013, providing access to such data as warning letters, seizures and injunctions, as well as statistics for recalls. The FDA plans to update the data in the dashboard semi-annually.  Read More
